What are white dorpers good for?

How Annalara White Dorper discovered the South African sheep breed

Annalara White Dorper was established in 1998 from embryos imported from South Africa. From the first day we have been amazed of the performance of the White Dorper breed and Dorper sheep in general. As they really know how to survive in harsh conditions.

Two traits we looked for in White Dorper:
  • Fast maturing breed: White Dorpers are an excellent choice as they are a fast growing sheep breed, from one day old to six months. It adds an advantage to the breed when producing quality red meat for an increasing demand of protein across Australia and globally. With lambs ready for slaughter at 6 months of age. As it is a younger age it is seen to not be sustainable. By implementing the right structure in place to allow for your flock to become fully developed.
  • High fertility rates: How to get your flock to the numbers it needs to be is by having excellent fertility rates with your ewes. For both maiden and older ewes it is important that they are still providing value while rearing lambs. To have the high fertility rates it is important that they are receiving the right nutrition and this can be done by providing a supplement in the form of a dry lick and lick blocks.
We were based in western NSW near Wilcannia. With the tough conditions of droughts and floods through the 1990's we were looking to find a breed of sheep that we could introduce to the area that would perform under intense heat as we neared 50 degrees celsius in summer periods.

Three ways you can have White Dorpers:
  1. Stud Flock: With the knowledge of Dorpers spreading across Australia in the 2000's it was soon that there was an influx of studs popping up across the country. Without the studs it is not possible to know the true genetics and data behind your production.
  2. Commercial enterprise: The most common way that White Dorpers are grown across Australia as the studs are selling to their clients in order to supply the market with quality source of red meat.
  3. Hobby farm: With many interested hobby farmers interested in the breed due to their capacity of eating literally anything they have been popular on small blocks as well.

The Cobar Ram Sale has been and gone with 114 lots went to auction knocked down by Nutriens Solutions. Annalara White Dorper had a great day with Steve, Jack and Isabel attending to showcase ten of their best. Results for Annalara White Dorper were tops of $4,000 sold lots 62 and 100 and sold all ten for an average of $3,200. Great to see the confidence in the western districts of NSW and also online with two of our rams going to St George in QLD. As one of the original studs who were attending the Cobar Ram Sale it was great to catch up and see old and new clients to get together just in time before the NSW regional lockdown game into play. We always look forward to heading west as it's where the stud originated and what type of ram we wanted to breed. One that can withstand the harsh environments that western NSW can throw at you. Thank you to both Nutrien Russell and AuctionsPlus for putting the show together and allowing the 17 vendors to offer their best rams on the day.
