STUD buyers flocked ringside at the inaugural Australian Dorper and White Dorper Association Classic Sale at Wagga Wagga showground to get their chance at snapping up the $18,000 top-priced sire.

Buyers pushed the top White Dorper ram from Steve Cresswell’s Annalara White Dorper stud, Dubbo, to the $18,000 top, chasing its impeccable structure and commercial relevance.

The sale was set up to bring Dorper and White Dorper rams to a new venue, with the ability to service interstate clients and vendors respectively.

In total, 45 of 59 White Dorper rams topped the sale at $18,000 and averaged $2,036, while six of 14 Dorper rams topped at $1,800, averaging $967, five of eight White Dorper ewes averaged $640 and three Dorper ewes averaged $633.

The top ram was bought by Brendon and Maureen Duncan, Glen Park White Dorpers, Wentworth, in partnership with Phil Larwood, Bunneringie White Dorpers, Wentworth, for $18,000.

The Annalara ram weighed 94.5 kilograms, with an eye muscle depth (EMD) of 44 millimetres and was described by Mr. Duncan as not over prepared, with very correct conformation.

Mr Duncan runs 1,500 White Dorper stud ewes and 250 Dorper stud ewes, selling 500 Dorper and White Dorper rams annually.

“The ram was presented in paddock condition, which is suitable for our pastoral country,” he said.

Mr Duncan bought a second ram for $1,700, along with three Dorper ewes at $633.

Max and Tim Jones, Boxdale White Dorpers, Condobolin, were intent on buying genetics from the Australis stud, Strathalbyn, South Australia, buying its top White Dorper sire for $4,600, along with three White Dorper stud ewes for $733 and two more rams from the Highveld and Top Deck studs for $1,600 and $2,200 respectively.

The Annalara stud had a top day selling two more rams for $2,800 and $2,400 to J. and J. McLure, Cobar, and J.D. and W.E. Small, Lake Cargelligo, respectively.

Commercial buyers stepped in and bought strong lines of paddock rams, with C.R. and C.G. Smith, Shamrock Vale, Temora, purchasing six rams to a top of $1,700, averaging $1,050, while Landmark Narrandera bought four rams averaging $1,100 for clients.

Jillamalong Pastoral Company, “Spring Drive”, Corowa, outlaid $1,267 for three White Dorper rams; D.H. and J.M. Schmetzer, “Alawah”, Narrandera, bought two White Dorper rams at $1,600 and a third at $800, while fellow vendor Neil Gadsden, Rangeland White Dorpers, St. Arnaud, Victoria, paid $3,600 for a 94-kg stud sire and $1,400 for two new rams.
